As we’re off to the start of the new year, many people have set personal goals for themselves and what they would like to achieve in 2023. For many, these goals include personal physical changes to their bodies.
Aspiring for weight loss is one of the most common goals for a person. Still, a surprising amount of people also desire to change things on their body that diet and exercise cannot solve, such as changes to their facial characteristics.
While 2020 faced lower numbers of patients seeking plastic surgery, this was only because the clinics were mandated to be closed, like many non-essential clinics were. After re-opening, surgeons worldwide, from Toronto rhinoplasty specialists and beyond, found themselves booking up throughout 2021.
While the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has not yet released the total numbers from 2021, a few procedures seem to follow a pattern enough over the last few years. Due to this, some predictive guesses can be made as to which cosmetic surgeries will be the most popular in this upcoming year.
Rhinoplasty
The nose job has consistently been the top stop among surgical cosmetic surgeries over the last few years; this is true among both men and women.
A nose job is performed to help reshape a nose to improve the size, shape, and symmetry of it the face. In general, women seek a nose job to create a thinner and rounder nose, whereas men usually seek a straighter, broader, and more masculine nose.
Additionally, rhinoplasty can be used to treat a deviated septum, a common condition that can cause issues with breathing through the nose.
Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery was the second most popular cosmetic procedure among men and women in 2020, coming after rhinoplasty. Blepharoplasty is used to treat sagging skin around the eyelids, which can droop down and give a person a more tired and aged look.
In some severe cases, this drooping can even cause vision obstruction; in these cases, the procedure may be mandated by a doctor and covered by insurance.
This procedure helps a person look younger and more refreshed, as it also can be used to treat undereye bags and dark circles.
Facelift
A facelift procedure is done to treat multiple areas on the skin of a person’s face. This can be done to treat numerous issues such as sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, and combined with things such as fat transfers to restore volume in the cheeks.
A full facelift usually treats these issues from the jawline for things like sagging jowls to the forehead for things like a drooping brow and frown lines.
Lesser facelifts can also be performed to target particular regions of the face, such as a mini or mid-facelift, in times where the entire face does not need treatment.
Liposuction
Liposuction will likely always remain a top-five procedure in the cosmetic surgery world. This is because it is an incredibly versatile procedure. Liposuction can be performed almost anywhere on the body where stubborn fat cells can store themselves, such as the stomach, thighs, calves, back, neck, arms and chin.
Liposuction can also be used for fat transfers, where the removed fat from the designated donor area can then be transferred to areas such as the breast or buttocks for increased volume.
Breast Augmentation
The boob job is another top-five cosmetic surgery among women, able to change a person’s breasts’ shape, size, and symmetrically.
A person can choose between traditional saline implants, which are cheaper, and the body can safely absorb the saline in the event of a rupture. Meanwhile, silicone is a more long-lasting and natural feeling but slightly more expensive and can run with some risks if a silicone rupture occurs.
For a non-implant option, fat transfer breast augmentations are popular. It uses the natural fat elsewhere on the body and removes it via liposuction to increase volume in the breasts.
Abdominoplasty
A tummy tuck is a stomach surgery that is often confused with liposuction. While the two procedures can be performed together, a tummy tuck differs as it doesn’t target the fat underneath the skin but the skin itself.
In a tummy tuck, loose or sagging skin around the stomach, which has been stretched from conditions like weight fluctuations or pregnancy, is pulled tight, strengthening the muscles as well while removing the excess skin for a flattering look.
Breast Reductions
Breast reductions are so widely popular for a surprising reason; men get them too.
The most common form of breast reduction is performed to help women with disproportionally large breasts and relieve them from the physical pain, discomfort, and other associated issues.
However, male breast reduction, also known as gynecomastia surgery, is used to remove excess fatty tissue or enlarged breasts that occur in men. An unflattering term is known as “man boobs,” the condition is very common among men, who often feel emasculation and embarrassment from not having a flat chest.
