Flip on Long Edge

Flip on long edge is going to be the ideal option if you are planning to print a document or brochure in the regular portrait orientation. You can read the document like a book in this case. 

When you opt for a flip on long edge double-sided printing, you will have to flip the pages side-to-side. This is usually done on an upright book or Binder. 

Flip on Short Edge 

Flip on short edge is applicable when you want to print a document or brochure in landscape mode. You can also read it like a book here with page 2 positioned to the opposite of page 3 of the brochure and so on. 

When you opt for a flip on short edge double-sided printing, you will have to flip the pages over the top. This type of printing is usually done on a calendar. 

What is flip on long edge and flip on short edge?

A long edge means that the page is flipped or bound along the long side of the document. Flip on long edge is used when you want to flip the pages of a brochure or book side-to-side. This is ideal for a binder book or an upright book. 

Short edge means that the page is flipped or bound along the short side of the document. This is mostly used in printing calendars as you would like to flip the pages over the top.

Which way do you flip the paper to print double-sided?

If you are planning to print on both sides of the page but unsure of how to flip the page while printing, here’s all you need to do. First, put the side that you wish to print on face up with the top (leading edge) of the paper. When you are done printing the first side, move on to the second side that is to be printed. Put the paper to be printed face down with the top (leading edge) in first. If you are using letterhead paper for printing then put the paper with the head in first, facing down. You should be careful enough while printed on both sides to avoid the second page becoming upside down. 

How do you flip on long edge?

While printing on a duplex printer, go to the Layout tab and click on the button ‘Properties’. Here, you can choose between Flip on Short Edge or Flip on Long Edge. Choose the latter and click OK. Flip on long edge means that the page will be set up as Portrait for which you need to choose Long Edge. However, if you set up your page in the Landscape orientation, the pages will be printed along the short edge. 

How do you print double-sided but not upside down? 

If you want to ensure that the pages are not upside down while printing on both sides of the paper, select the option ‘Flip on Short Edge’. Now, select the button named ‘Multiple’ to print two or more brochure or booklet pages on both sides per-letter-sized sheet if your printer allows. 

How do you print a brochure double-sided?

You can create a folded booklet or brochure by printing the document in a special order. You need to change a few printing options to make a brochure. If you have a PDF document with which you need to make a brochure then follow these steps –

• Open the ‘Print’ dialog. You can go to the menu and click on print or use a keyword shortcut by typing Ctrl + P. 
• Now, go to the Properties Button and Select Landscape orientation after clicking the Orientation drop-down menu. 
• Go to the Duplex drop-down menu and select Short Edge. Now, to go back to your print dialog Click OK.
• Now choose Pages under the option ‘Range and Copies’. 
• Enter the number of pages to be printed in this order

n, 1, 2, n-1, n-2, 3, 4, n-3, n-4, ….11, 12, n-11, n-12,…

Here, n is a multiple of 4 and is the total number of pages

For a 4 page brochure, type 4, 1, 2, 3

For an 8 page brochure, type 8, 1, 2, 7, 6, 3, 4, 5

• Now, go to the Page Layout tab and select Brochure.
• Under Pages sides go to the Include drop-down menu and select ‘All Pages’.
• Lastly, click on the option ‘Print’.

What is the difference between long edge binding and short edge binding?

Long edge binding is done in a portrait mode which allows you to turn the pages side-to-side like you do in a book. Whereas, short edge binding is done a landscape mode allows the pages of the brochure, notepad, calendar or booklet to be oriented correctly when you flip the pages vertically. A document with a short edge binding will be wider than taller whereas in a long edge binding the length will be more than the width. 

When to use long edge or short edge?

If you want your document to have a landscape orientation with page 2 positioned opposite to page 3 and so on, then opt for short edge. Flip on short edge is ideal for printing notepads, calendars, brochures, drawing books, booklets, and others. Flip on long edge is ideal if you want your document to have a portrait orientation and open like a book.
