Well, there are numerous diseases across the globe and there is no wonder if you are unfamiliar with some diseases. For many, Barrett’s Disease is not quite a common or familiar one. What is Barrett’s Disease by the way? Many people may consider this question as an obsolete or ridiculous one. However, it cannot be denied that some people do need to know the answer of this question. Well, Barrett’s Disease is, in fact, the serious complication of Gastro esophageal Reflux, also referred to as Acid Reflux or GERD. And, Barrett’s Disease, occurs when the chronic Barrett’s Disease perpetuates for a long time untreated. The tissue lining in the Barrett’s Disease or Barrett’s esophagus changes and becomes like the lining of the intestine.

What Causes Barrett’s Disease?

The Barrett’s Disease is the result of the chronic acid reflux that perpetuates for a long period of time. And, acid reflux is caused by various factors like hiatus hernia or faulty valve, caffeinated & carbonated food items & beverages, alcohol, smoking, spicy foods, and obesity etc.  For a person suffering from acid reflux, it is essential to keep away from those that Acid Reflux Causes it.

How to Identify the Barrett’s Disease?

Like any other diseases, Barrett’s Disease should be identified by its symptoms. However, the problem with this disease is that it has no exclusive symptoms of its own. As it is the extended or complicated condition of GERD, the symptoms of GERD are observed to identify the Barrett’s Disease. The symptoms of GERD such as frequent heartburn, difficulty in swallowing food, burning pain in the chest, recurring vomiting, coughing, breathing problem, sudden increase of saliva, and bad breath etc are useful to identify Barrett’s Disease.

How to Diagnose?

If the GERD disease has turned into a chronic one and the symptoms of GERD are occurring frequently, thereby creating trouble, it is advisable to visit the doctor and consult for undergoing the diagnosis procedure. The disease is not very common and only about 10% of the patients with acid reflux get affected by Barrett’s Disease. However, it is advisable to consult the doctor and eliminate the disease before it turns into any kind of complexity.

How is Barrett’s Disease Diagnosed?

The abnormal pink lining, which is indicative of the Barrett’s Disease, should be detected by Endoscopy. Furthermore, the microscopic evaluation of the biopsy should be carried out. It would make it clear whether the lining cells of the esophagus have been replaced by the intestinal type lining cells. Also, the presence of goblet cells should be detected.

Treatment

In case of acid reflux or Barrett’s Disease, the acid suppressing medicines like Proton Pump Inhibitors. Moreover, the endoscopic ablative therapies and endoscopic mucosal resection are very much used to treat Barrett’s Disease. And, if the complication has become severe, the doctor may decide to execute surgery. Usually, surgery is used to treat Barrett’s Disease if there are no other alternatives.
