1790: The First Detailed Design:
Englishman Thomas Saint invented the first sewing machine made up of hand crank to stitch leather and canvas. This is considered to be the first detailed design but with a prototype for this design but still, in 1874 William Newton Wilson used the same idea of Saint and built the detailed design of the sewing machine.
Early 18th Century: Many Attempts and Many Failures:
In 1810, Balthasar Krems again tried his attempt to build an automated machine for sewing caps. But this invention didn’t work and hence he didn’t patent his invention. Again, an Austrian Tailor, Josef Madersperger tried much and put all his hard work effectively and invented the sewing machine in 1814 with a patent. But it again became a failure.
In 1804, Thomas Stone and James Henderson invented an emulated type of the hand-sewing machine but were considered to be a failure. Again in the same year, Scott John Duncan invented the embroidery machine that met again failure.
In 1818, John Adams Doge and John Knowles invented one more model of the sewing machine which met failure.
The first Functional Machine That Caused a Riot:
After many attempts, the first sewing machine with proper functioning was introduced by the French Tailor, Barthelemy Thimonnier in the year 1830. But, due to this invention, he was killed by a group of French Tailors thinking that this invention might cause unemployment for them and hence, they burnt this while garment factory along with him.
Walter Hunt and Elias Howe:
In 1834, Walter Hunt invented the first sewing machine but he didn’t patent his invention thinking that it might cause unemployment for the tailors. Thus, a patent issued to Elias Howe after a lot of struggles faced by him.
Isaac Singer vs. Elias Howe:
After 1850, the mass production of the sewing machines was seen. Isaac Singer invented the lockstitch model of the sewing machine, which was actually the Howe’s model and thus he file the case against Singer and won in 1854. But the thing is that the Walter hunt model also used the lockstitch model. Singer copied Howe’s model of the sewing machine which led to several issues and finally Elias Howe died in 1867, which led to the expiry of his patent. By the year 1905, the electrically-powered sewing machine was successfully invented after the invention of mechanical sewing machines in the garment factory in 1889.
