Most people are ready to refresh their homes when spring comes along, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only time you should do some of the most essential home maintenance tasks. When you keep your home maintained, inside and out, it not only keeps it looking nice and comfortable to live in but can also prevent bigger problems in the future. In this article, we’ll go over some overlooked home maintenance tasks you should incorporate into your regular routine, from gutter cleaning to cleaning up your yard.

Clean your garbage disposal

Does it sometimes smell when you’re at the kitchen sink? Your garbage disposal and sink drain can easily become clogged with bits of food and other debris. You may not notice it right away, but over time it can affect the performance and lifespan of your disposal. Plus, it can start to smell if not cleaned regularly. To keep your disposal running smoothly, try grinding some ice and citrus peels to keep blades sharp and get rid of build-up.

Check and replace HVAC filters

Most people change their HVAC filters when they first move into a new home, but then tend to forget about it. However, replacing your filters regularly helps keep your heating and cooling system running efficiently. It’s recommended that you change them every three months on average. If you have pets or you’ve experienced other hazards that may affect your air quality, such as smoke from wildfires, it may need to be changed more often.

Inspect and clean your gutters

Another often neglected task is gutter cleaning. It may not seem like a big deal, but clogged gutters can cause water damage to your roof and foundation. Getting up on your roof to check your gutters a few times a year is key to making sure they function properly and catching any needed repairs before it turns into a bigger problem.

When inspecting and cleaning your gutters, first remove any debris that may have built up, such as leaves or twigs. Then check for any cracks or holes that may need to be patched up. If possible, try to do gutter cleaning before the rainy season or winter so you can prevent any water buildup and damage.

Inspect and clean your roof

Roof cleaning probably isn’t something you’ve thought about. However, while you’re up on the roof inspecting and cleaning gutters, it’s a good idea to also take the time to check and clean your roof. Algae, moss, and other debris can accumulate on your roof over time and cause damage if left unattended. Regular roof cleaning not only helps maintain its appearance but also extends its lifespan so that you can avoid expensive repairs or replacements in the future. To do this, use a power washer to remove moss or other stuck on debris. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, hire a professional roof cleaning service.

Clear overgrown or dead vegetation

Whether you have professionally landscaped areas or natural landscaping, keeping it maintained and free of overgrown or dead vegetation not only helps improve the appearance of your outdoor space but can also prevent any potential fire hazards. Trimming back trees and bushes regularly is important to prevent them from growing too close to your home or blocking paths. Dead plants should also be removed as they can attract unwanted pests.

Maintaining your home is an important task that often gets overlooked. However, if you take time to do some essential maintenance tasks regularly, like roof cleaning and cleaning up your yard, you can prevent bigger problems in the future. While there are plenty of other home maintenance tasks to do regularly if you want to keep your home in good shape, start with the ones mentioned above and incorporate them into your routine. Your home (and wallet) will thank you!
