After your twelve long years of schooling are over, it’s time to decide what you are going to do with the rest of your life. While there are many paths you can go down, it’s understandable why it can be so overwhelming. Sometimes individuals are often pressured into something that they don’t really want to do.

In this article, we are going to talk about what to do after graduating from high school so that you can make the best decision for you. Here’s a hint (college isn’t the only option).

Let’s get started!

College

One of the main routes that many people choose is to go to college straight after graduation. This way, you can earn your degree as quickly as possible and get the job of your dreams with your new skillset. However, it’s a lengthy process, and you often need to apply for schools early to increase your chances of getting accepted.

On top of this, around 50% of graduates never even use their degree. So, this is certainly something you will want to consider first. If you are having trouble deciding where to go, check out these best colleges in Boston. There are so many options out there; you just need to do a little research first!

Travel

Another popular choice for many individuals is to take a gap year before heading straight into work and study. It gives you the opportunity to explore while you are young and have few responsibilities. You can go on that road trip with your friends, travel across the world, or even just take a few weeks to explore somewhere new.

Rather than just traveling, you might also consider working abroad to fund your journey. There are a variety of different options out there, and some even include housing. From nannying to farm work, just by asking the locals, you will almost positively find something.

Military

If you are looking for a highly rewarding job that allows you to travel and work simultaneously, then joining the military might just be the perfect choice for you. While it does require a lot of focus and discipline, there are many benefits that can help you seek that adventure you may be craving.

Not only will you learn some of the most valuable skills, but you can also receive an excellent salary, health care, home financing, and a debt-free degree. The army isn’t the only option either; you can choose to join the navy, air force, corps, or coast guards. There are also a variety of jobs within each of those branches to choose from.

Work

If studying isn’t what you want after graduating, then one of the simplest options is to consider finding a job. As mentioned above, only 50% of college graduates use their degrees. This means that there is a vast amount of great jobs out there to help you gain experience and move up the ladder.

For instance, you could staff off as a barista in a coffee shop, move up to a managerial position, and then even purchase a small business. There are so many possibilities; you just need to find something that you enjoy.

Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is a term used to describe “on the job learning.” An individual will work while gathering all of the knowledge they need to become a trained professional. In many cases, the company will pay for the course, and the pay is much higher than that of an internship.

Most of America’s apprenticeships are in skilled trades, such as construction, plumbing, and painting; however, there are other options out there. It’s a great way to gain an education without having the debt associated with college.

Family

While we might be pressured to work or study straight after school, it’s important to remember that it isn’t your only choice. For some individuals, starting a family is just as important as earning money and is something that they significantly want in life.

While having children might not be for everyone, it can undoubtedly be considered one of life’s greatest achievements. You get to watch them grow and learn, all while being there to support their decisions. It truly is incredible, so don’t be ashamed if that is what you want.

Breathe

Finally, one of the most important things to do when graduating from high school is to remember to breathe. If you don’t have an idea of what you want to do straight away, that’s ok! Take some time, assess your situation, and then choose what is right for you. The last thing you want is to be stuck doing something that doesn’t make you happy. Never be ashamed of your dreams, and know that whatever you choose, you can do it.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”
