Robot cars and toys have always fascinated me and until a couple of years back, I seriously believed that Robotic Process Automation (RPA) had something to do with robots doing your work, or driving you to work, and stuff like that. But all it took for me to get rid of the weird definition

the RPA I had in my fantasy world was a few google searches.

I have decent information on the subject now, and so I decided to why not share some of the knowledge I have gained in these few years of investing myself into learning about business process automation and how Robotic Process Automation tools are transforming the automation industry.

So let’s start with the basics of what Robotic Process Automation is all about and then we will be discussing a few

advantages of robotic process automation followed by how intelligent automation is taking the automation industry a step ahead.

What is business process automation using RPA:

Business process automation simply means using technology and tools to automate day-to-day tasks and streamline various business processes. Robotic Process Automation is a form of BPA. Robotic Process Automation uses bots to take care of the automation, however, these bots are software robots that are programmed to execute recurring human activities, based on specific rules(triggers).

RPA technology has been gaining traction over the past few years, as businesses are loving the ability of software bots performing their repetitive tasks which offers them a competitive edge.

Interesting fact to note here is that the RPA industry is further moving towards Intelligent Process Automation by combining other technologies like AI, ML, NLP, etc. However, it will require a whole new post, discussing the same. So, for now, let’s focus on the advantages of RPA.

Advantages of RPA:

Robotic Process Automation tools offer several advantages to business over the traditional business process automation tools. Some of the advantages are as follows:

  1. Cost-effective:

There’s no doubt on the capabilities of RPA whatsoever. Cost-effectiveness, however, is something that gives RPA an upper hand over other BPAs. One of the key advantages is that RPAs can integrate easily with your existing business model and work in sync with them to automate tasks at various business process levels. This can significantly reduce the costs of replacing the existing systems.

  1. Increased quality assurance, accuracy, and profitability

Machines and computer programs are designed in a way that they are significantly less erring than the average human. The same can be said for RPAs as they tend to make fewer errors as compared to humans. Moreover, when we take into account the errors made by an employee and multiply it with the total employees serving at an organizational level, the errors made can significantly hurt businesses.

Therefore, incorporating RPAs can not only contribute to better quality service but also offer increased task accuracy and profitability.

  1. Improved time management:

On comparing the time consumed by a human performing any task manually vs a computer program executing the same task, we will find that most of the time, RPAs have an upper hand. And again, running this comparison at an organizational level shows that using human labor for tasks that can be automated by using RPAs, can backfire businesses and cost them a significant amount of time being wasted.

A few other advantages can be:

  • Employee Empowerment
  • Better Control
  • Better compliance management
  • Increased overall productivity

Conclusion:

We can clearly see from the above discussion how RPA is transforming and empowering the work culture. Furthermore, the innovations being made around improving RPA technologies and combining them with other technologies to offer them an intellect to execute tasks with human intervention is already becoming popular as Intelligent process automation and coming up as next-gen Robotic Process Automation.
