TILES: AN INTEGRAL PART OF BUILDING A HOME

People often wonder about what a building represents. Buildings and houses have tiles that give an impeccable insight into the people who built them.

People often wonder about what a building represents. Buildings and houses have tiles that give an impeccable insight into the people who built them. In contemporary times, tiles have become an essential part of any construction. Tiles are thin objects made from ceramic, stone, metal or clay. That is, they enrich the interior and exterior of a building, structure or any location. Tile manufacturers provide many types, in many shades and colours and tiles for different purposes. They are primarily a finishing product; but an integral part of a home.

How to choose the best tile?

It is the most daunting question when it comes to purchasing tiles.

The first cardinal rule is that each area in the estate needs a different kind of tile. Go through brochures of various outlets and get a broad idea about the available designs and the price range.

The size of the tile and the size of the room has to achieve coherence. Small tiles are best suited for small-sized rooms, for example. The size of the room also widely affects the choice of colour. With a big room, one has more options, whereas one has to choose a lighter colour with a small area.

The grout and cementing material are also vital factors in choosing the tile. A contrasting grout will emphasise the design of the tile, while a grout in a complementary colour like the tile will give a subtle effect.

Finally, the colour, texture and pattern should be in sync with the theme and idea of the house. Ensure that the style of each room flows with the entire estate.

What are the different types of tiles and their purpose?

Material matters the most. Tiles, in general, are made from anything that is physically transformable; Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass, Granite, Marble and other natural stones, for example. Each material has its speciality and best purpose for which it is suited. Ceramic tiles are best suited for bathrooms and kitchens; stone tiles are the best fit for pavements, for example.

Tiles come in many shapes and sizes. Naturally, it is in sync with the purpose of the tile. Some of the patterns and designs are Brick Bond, Chevron Pattern, Circle, Fan Tiles, HerringBone, Hexagonal, Rectangle, Rhomboid and Square Tiles. Consumers have to choose the pattern keeping longevity in mind.

Location determines the choice. Tiles, as we know, is used in the kitchen, hallway, walls, pavements, garden, balcony, pool, etc. One has to take into account the texture of the tile while choosing the location. For example, tiles with rough surfaces will do justice for pavements and staircases. Similarly, tiles with a smooth surface are best suited for the pool area.

Colours, hues and gradients. Tiles are rare products where the manufacturer produces a wide array of colours, patterns and designs. However, customers exceed the imagination of the product manufacturers. Therefore, the manufacturers of tiles need to be on par with the wants of customers. Terrazzo style tiles are one such example where the pattern can quench the creative thirst of customers.

Why choose tiles over other materials?

The answer is simple. Tiles satisfy many criteria which a home builder is expecting. Tiles possess design versatility, easy to clean, simple to repair and maintain. They are damage proof as compared to materials like wood. Tiles can withstand moisture and daily wear without breaking down. Moreover, tiles have superior cooling properties; they are a natural room air conditioner in the summer.

Tiles are one of the most broadly used construction materials for a smooth finish and a classy look. Hence, one cannot forget about tiles when building a house.
