What Is Phimosis And Paraphimosis?

Phimosis and paraphimosis are the problems associated with the foreskin of the penis. Phimosis is the problem in which the foreskin can’t be pulled down (retracted) from the tip of the penis. Phimosis is one of the common problems with young boys. While on the other hand Paraphimosis is the problem that causes the retracted foreskin to move back up. This can restrict normal blood flow in the penis causing some serious problems in the future.

Causes Of Phimosis And Paraphimosis In Children

The phimosis occurs when the opening of the foreskin is tightened.  This is formal for a newborn baby. But over time the foreskin loosens and by the age of 17 most of the boys are able to fully retract their foreskin. Phimosis could also occur if the skin is forced back before it is ready. In that case, a fibrous scar is formed. This, in turn, stops the foreskin to retract in the future.

Paraphimosis, on the other hand, is caused when the foreskin is retracted behind the crown of the penis. This makes the foreskin too tight to move back again.

Potential Symptoms Of Phimosis And Paraphimosis

Mostly these abnormalities are found in children. So, if you encounter any one of the symptoms in your child, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor.

The most common symptoms of Phimosis include:

  • Bulging of the foreskin when urinating.
  • Not able to fully retract the foreskin by age 3. In some boys, this may take longer.

The most common symptoms of paraphimosis include:
  • Swelling of the tip of the penis when the foreskin is pulled back.

Pain.

Not able to pull the foreskin back over the tip of the penis.

Tip of the penis is dark red or blue in color.

Pain when urinating.

Decreased urinary stream.

If you encounter any Paraphimosis symptoms on your child, consult a doctor as it is a more serious issue as compared to Phimosis.
