5 DISADVANTAGES OF COMMUTING ON YOUR WORKFORCE

An uncountable volume of people in the world commute to and from work daily, and it’s not unusual to hear that. Majority of those who opt for commuting from home to work and vice versa are those who don’t own cars, or simply because they find that commuting is the best option to reach their workplace.

If you’re a business owner, let me ask you some questions. Do you somehow observe your employees’ daily performance? Do you ever try to pinpoint the causes of why there are some who have poor performance? Whatever your answers are, you’ve clicked the right page to read because tackled here is one of the major reasons that affect the employees’ performance badly – commuting.

  • RESULTS TO EMPLOYEES’ ABSENTEEISM

If a majority of your commuting employees gives an obvious and consistent sign of absenteeism, then you must figure out a way to resolve the problem. Commuting might not be a serious matter when it crosses your ears and mind – especially if you got to and from work with your car. Sad to say, it has a great negative impact on your workforce that may or may not be visible in your naked eyes.

Commuting is one of the primary causes of workers’ absenteeism behaviour. The exhausting daily transportation system drains your employees even before they reach the workplace. Too much exhaustion may result for them to get sick, feel tremendously tired and lazy. They might possibly be more drained at the commuting matter than spending hours at work.

  • REDUCES THE EMPLOYEES’ WILLINGNESS TO WORK

A tiring daily public transportation system will surely lessen your employees’ enthusiasm at work – whether you like it or not. Why? Imagine how a hassle it is to spend time in a crowded bus or train standing and sweat is falling down your face, isn’t it so irritating and tiring? Of course, it is.

That is why most employers are very picky when it comes to how far is the applicant from the work address. And that is simply for the sake of the company and the applicant as well.  The daily transportation system takes away a huge amount of your employees’ energy that results to a decreased willingness to be productive at work.

  • CONTRIBUTES TO STRESS, AND TOO MUCH EXHAUSTION

If ever you would post a statement saying, “Commuting daily is so much stressful and exhausting”, you would probably be famous in an instant. A great number of employees who commute to work daily greatly relate to this.

Imagine yourself being in a bustle in any transportation means you could think of, crowded and humid air, wouldn’t you get stressed?  And that results for your employees to get tired and stressed that may affect their work performance. Though they aren’t the one to blame especially that owning a car takes a lot of expenses and responsibilities as wells.

  • DECREASES THE EMPLOYEES’ WORK FOCUS

If you are having a question in your mind as to how a simple act of commuting can affect your employees’ focus. This is due to too much tiredness in commuting to work. Their tiredness or stress in commuting may divert their focus and/or attention easily – thinking of tons of ways to reduce their stress or to simply spend some time to take a rest.

However, a decrease in the workforce’s performance may be alarming in a way that it might affect the growth or progress of the company since the workloads are being frozen due to absentees or “let-me-take-a-rest-first” type of employees. If ever you face this kind of undesirable scenario as a business owner, then it’s time for you to for HR support. Human resources staffs are knowledgeable in handling situations in the company premises as well as to the weakening workforce.

  • LEADS TO FREQUENT TARDINESS

If you would ask your employees what they could consider as the major reason of their tardiness, you might hear them say again and again, “I’m sorry sir/ma’am, and I get stuck in the traffic”. And that’s because they only commute to work. They will fight all odds just to get a taxi in time, or to get in the bus stop in time, or to get in the train IN TIME.

And that thought of rushing and beating the time clock simply exhausts them mentally – thinking if they could make it on or before the office hours. If you want your employees to stay despite their usual tardiness, you could implement a flexible office hour of course with prior limitations.

This article isn’t merely written in sympathy of the workers who commute to and from work daily- like me. But this is to give you and your company a respectful and friendly nudge to take action. Here is the list of the possible solutions you can take:

  • Implement a more flexible office hours
  • Ask for the HR support as soon as you can
  • Avoid hiring applicants that reside into a location an hour or so away from the company address.
  • If you can recommend a potential applicant or employee into your company’s nearest branch to their address, do it without thinking twice.
