Calicut also known as Kozhikode is the third largest city in Kerala after Trivandrum and Kochi. Etymology has it that the city which was once a famous cotton-weaving center during the medieval period, got its name from the fabric ‘Calico’- a British term meaning ‘cloth’. The city served as a gateway to European trade with the arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498.
